Save the Children Rwanda partners with Cardano Foundation
Save the Children Rwanda recently announced a partnership with the Cardano Foundation to help boost cryptocurrency donations. Through this new program, Save the Children in Rwanda can now receive donations of ADA, Cardano’s cryptocurrency, allowing donations to come directly to the organization without any intermediaries.
The funds raised through the new partnership with Cardano will be invested in African-based social enterprises focusing on children, families, and youth, such as those supported by the recently launched Kumwe Hub, which seeks “to bring together innovation and impact investment across Africa, with blockchain central to both.” This exciting new innovation hub currently has many projects in the pipeline including a project exploring academic records for children crossing borders, digital IDs for refugees, and lending mechanisms for the financially excluded.
Within hours of launch, the program already received over 22,000 ADA, or approximately $30,000 USD in donations through the new system. This builds on Save the Children’s history of accepting cryptocurrency donations, with it being the first global NGO to accept Bitcoin donations, which it started accepting back in 2013.
According to Maggie Korde, Save the Children’s Country Director in Rwanda:
This is one of many examples of large international organizations accepting and embracing the potential of blockchain and cryptocurrency to change the world for the better. Another example recently highlighted in an earlier blog post is UNICEF, which both accepts cryptocurrency donations, and funds blockchain start-ups through its Innovation Fund. Hopefully we continue to see large NGOs embrace and adapt crypto as an important tool to advance their missions, diversify their revenue, and fund amazing start-up programs.
