Ten projects and collectives using web3 and blockchain to support ocean and marine conservation and regeneration

Marine habitats are complex and diverse ecosystems that are an essential component of life on earth. Unfortunately, due in large part to climate change, ocean acidification, over fishing, pollution, and a number of other causes, marine biodiversity is facing an existential threat. In fact, an estimated 30-50% of vulnerable marine habitats have been lost, including 50% of coral reefs.

Addressing this urgent crisis will take a robust, complex response involving governments, NGOs, corporations, and the tech sector. Blockchain and web3 solutions can and should be a part of addressing this crisis, as we’ve seen numerous projects emerge that are coming up with innovative ways to use technology to support healthy oceans and marine life. In this blog post, we highlight ten web3 collectives, projects, and organizations supporting ocean and marine conservation and regeneration.

1. OceanDrop

OceanDrop is a charitable NFT project hosted by the Open Earth Foundation, A non-profit organization dedicated to developing open-source technology for climate action. Proceeds from the sale of the NFTs support a pilot project aimed at expanding Marine protection areas of Cocos Island and Costa Rica.

2. Diatom DAO

Diatom is a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) focused on building and investing in data-driven solutions for ocean conversation. Their first project, Plastic Removal Credits (PRC), is a digital token backed by plastic removed from the ocean.

3. Fishcoin

Fishcoin is a blockchain-based seafood traceability project, which “incentivizes supply chain stakeholders to share data from the point of harvest to the point of consumption.” This helps create a more open, transparent, and accountable seafood industry.

4. ConservatioNFT

In partnership with wildlife organizations, ConservatioNFT creates NFTs that are used to fund conservation efforts around the world. Over half of the revenue generated from sales goes towards wildlife organizations. Their Turtle Foundation NFT project raises funds in support of Turtle Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles.

5. ReSea Project

The ReSea Project, an organization based out of Denmark with the mission “to end the ocean plastic crisis while making waves beyond the sea we work in,” is partnering with VeChain and DNV to verify Ocean plastic cleanup via blockchain.

6. MoonJelly

MoonJelly is a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) creating an “Ocean Impact” NFT marketplace to raise funds in support of ocean conservation. They are also launching their own token, Jelly Token, to raise liquidity and to fund ocean restoration projects, which will be chosen through community governance.

7. Crypto Coral Tribe

Crypto Coral Tribe is a collection of 6565 NFTs, and a community “leveraging art and technology to drive marine and wildlife conservation.” This includes using proceeds from their first pledge to plant 3000 corals across three continents.

8. United By Blue NFT

The United By Blue NFT collection was launched by United By Blue, “a sustainable lifestyle brand with a mission to clean up the ocean.” Since 2010, United by Blue has removed 3.9 million pounds of trash from waterways in the US and around the world. The NFT collection aims to raise funds to support their ocean cleanup work.

9. Seaworthy Collective

The Seaworthy Collective aims to “empower current and aspiring entrepreneurs to innovate for regenerative ocean and climate impact” and provides support and tools to their community including community building and education, catalytic network connections, Co-Founder and Operator talent, and access to investing partner capital. In their 2022 roadmap, they explain their plan to “leverage innovative mechanisms in Web3 to catalyze economic drivers for ocean and climate impact and develop a scalable model for regenerative finance.”

10. Digital Ocean NFT

Digital Ocean NFT is an NFT project with two collections produced by Digital Charity Art, an organization aimed at connecting charities to NFTs. The first collection contains 250 unique turtle scenes, with the proceeds supporting a number of marine conservation organizations.
