Crypto Charity Profile: The Bail Project

In this blog series, we highlight charities doing great work around the world that accept cryptocurrency donations. For this post, we are thrilled to highlight the amazing work being done by The Bail Project.

The Bail Project’s Mission

“The Bail Project combats mass incarceration by disrupting the money bail system—one person at a time. We restore the presumption of innocence, reunite families, and challenge a system that criminalizes race and poverty. We’re on a mission to end cash bail and create a more just, equitable, and humane pretrial system.”

The United States is facing a mass incarceration crisis, largely driven by the criminalization of race and poverty. In fact, nearly 500,000 people are in jail on any given night awaiting trial, simply because they cannot afford bail. The Bail Project looks to combat this through an approach that consists of providing bail to eligible participants at no cost to them or their families, court support including notifications and transportation, and advocacy based on the individual needs of each client to ensure they can get the support they need.

Impacts

The Bail Project works in locations all throughout the United States, including in states such as California, Texas, Louisiana, and Florida, where the overincarceration epidemic is especially troubling.

To date, they have paid bail for 18,519 people, at the time of writing. They partner with many high-impact organizations to challenge cash bail and mass incarceration including branches of the ACLU and NAACP, various public defense organizations, and other justice-oriented non-profits.

Through the support of nearly 500,000 donors, The Bail Project is able to ensure thousands of individuals each year not only get support in the form of bail, but also in the form of wrap-around care through their Community Release with Support model.
