Crypto Altruism Podcast Episode 58 - Pride in the Metaverse - How web3 can help advance LGBTIQ rights, ft. Katie from OutRight and Hackatao
In Episode 58, we have the privilege of being joined by Katie Hultquist, Director of Leadership Giving for OutRight International, and Sandie and Paola, who are here on behalf of Hackatao. We discuss the recent partnership between Outright and Hackatao for the Pride with a Purpose Campaign, the role web3 and NFTs can play in advancing LGBTIQ rights, how we can build a more inclusive web3, the importance of decentralization and why it’s worth preserving, and much more.
About Katie, OutRight, and Hackatao
Katie Hultquist is the Director of Leadership Giving for OutRight Action International, and you may remember Katie as she was actually the first ever guest on the Crypto Altruism Podcast back on Episode 6. For over 30 years, OutRight Action International has fought to eradicate the persecution, inequality, and violence lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) people face around the world. Headquartered in New York with staff in 7 countries, OutRight supports grassroots LGBTIQ activists, documents human rights violations, advocates for inclusion and equality, and holds leaders accountable for protecting the rights of LGBTIQ people everywhere. OutRight has recognized consultative status at the United Nations, where it serves as Secretariat of the UN LGBTI Core Group. Katie Hultquist has spent more than 25 years working for social justice in the non-profit sector and now serves as OutRight's Director of Leadership Giving, where she leads OutRight's partnerships in the crypto giving space. Outright recently launched its third Pride with a Purpose campaign, which had many web3 activations, including one in partnership with our next guest Hackatao.
Hackatao is one of the OG Decentralized Artists and NFT pioneers. Embracing the movement and the idea that the artistic and social potential of the space could be exponential, in 2018 Hackatao were amongst the few who firmly believed in the future power of crypto art. As OG and aware of the fact that this is just the “tip of the iceberg” of what could be experimented with creativity and blockchain, Hackatao continue to walk their own way, while never stopping looking forward and never looking back. Since their first NFT, “Girl Next Door” in 2018, they have released many notable collections, including Queens & Kings, which was developed in partnership with NFT Studios, and supported by Sotheby’s.
Three Key Takeaways
The web3 space can provide sustenance and community to Queer people – by providing a safe space for people to find a community of support, including through Pride events in the metaverse, and by supporting the livelihoods of Queer artists.
Being an ally means taking action, not just talking. Those in the web3 space need to make sure Queer people are included in their leadership, to create spaces to uplift Queer artists, and to financially support LGBTIQ artists and movements.
In web3 it’s all about community and collaboration. We have an amazing opportunity to learn from the mistakes of web2 and create the most inclusive web3 possible, and it all starts with collaboration. The Pride With A Purpose campaign is a great example of how collaboration can drive change.
